WMST students bank on their futures

On October 27, Washington Math Science Technology Public Charter High School hosted an education program designed to educate the school's 404 students on the importance of establishing a strong personal financial foundation, as they grow into adults.

Conducted by Operation HOPE, Inc., of Arlington, Va., the Banking on Our Future (BOOF) program consists of five modules: Dignity, Basics of Banking, Checking and Savings, The Power of Credit, and Investments. The Power of Credit module, for example, informed students what constitutes of credit score and how a high credit score can help them borrow money as adults with a lower interest rate repayment than otherwise because they are a better credit risk.

Five corporate institutions – Bank of America, BB&T, E*TRADE, Industrial Bank and the State Bank of India, CA, participated in the BOOF program at WMST PCHS. The BOOF curriculum is aligned with the Principals and Standards fro School Mathematics compiled by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and Operation HOPE's volunteer HOPE CORPS delivered it at WMST PCHS.
