To allow Washington Math Science Technology students an opportunity to help create new programs and better shape their school and to give students a leadership opportunities, WMST has formed a Student Government Association (SGA).
On Monday February 1, the 16 new SGA officers were inducted and participated in a half-day workshop at the Holiday Inn on Bladensburg Road, N.E., across the street from the school.
In a lunchtime talk, DC Councilman Harry Thomas Jr. (D.-5th District) encouraged them to think first of the needs and interests of the body they represent (SGA) over their own personal interests. He remarked how impressed he was that WMST's administration was putting on the half-day orientation and helping to form the students into leaders.
“I don't know of any other SGAs who do this,” said Thomas, a District native whose father also served on the DC City Council.

WMST faculty members Mr. Shannon Wilson (9th Grade), Ms. Vivianne Forrester (10th Grade), Mr. Willie Ingram (11th grade) and Mrs. Nicole Keller (12th grade) are serving as moderators for each class SGA contingent, which includes a president, vice president, treasurer and secretary. To serve in SGA, each student had to produce a petition with at least 25 classmates' signature, and each officer also has to maintain at least a 2.5 Grade Point Average (out of 4.0).
Ms. Kortni Stafford, assistant principal for academics at WMST, said that SGA members plan to launch a school-wide recycling program at WMST. They also will raise money to defray senior class expenses.
