Family of WMST PCHS Foundress Announces Pledge of Support

To honor the school's foundress on her 75th birthday, the family of Dr. Mary Johnson announced today that it is donating $7,500 over 10 years to support Washington Mathematics Science Technology Public Charter High School (WMST PCHS).

Two-third of the amount will go toward the Dr. Mary Johnson Mathematics  Scholarship Award, a $500 college scholarship award given each year to the WMST PCHS graduating senior who is the top Math student during senior year, according to James Johnson, the son of Dr. Johnson. He is an attorney who lives in Georgia.

Dr. Mary Johnson turned 75 years old today. WMST PCHS honored her on May 15, 2009 at its Shining Beacon Gala Evening at Gallaudet University in Washington, where she gave the keynote address. Mark Holbrook, WMST PCHS head of school, commissioned paintings of Dr. Johnson and Floyd Gilmore, former principal of WMST PCHS.

A mathematician, Dr. Johnson founded WMST PCHS in 1998 after it previously existed as the Ballou Senior High School Math, Science Technology Program in Southeast Washington. She served as principal for one year, but spent many months navigating the process for founding a public charter school and giving WMST PCHS its founding vision.

She currently serves as math coordinator for TRIO Student Support Services at the University of the District of Columbia and also runs her own mathematics educational service.
