Ten WMST students prepare for trip to Germany and Poland

At the Washington Mathematics Science Technology Public Charter High School (WMST PCHS) graduation on June 3, First Lady Michelle Obama urged the WMST Class of 2009 to travel widely and learn a second language so they could understand the world better.

Taking her words to heart, a group of 10 WMST PCHS students, led by teacher Carsten Binsner, a Berlin native, are taking a two-week trip to Germany and Poland, leaving from Dulles International Airport on Sept. 18.

To finance this trip, which costs more than $13,300, the group has held carwashes and a bratworst feast at the Binsner home. One parent donated $800 while another has raised more than $3,500. Mr. Binsner has held down costs by receiving free lodging and in-country transportation through the German government and negotiating a discounted roundtrip air fare.

On Aug. 31, Mr. Binsner announced during an evening meeting with parents and students that they were close - $12,218 raised - but would need to produce $1,200 more to reach the $13,367 trip costs.
